Anita Sharma, 2022
Anita Sharma lives in Toongi village, situated near Toonga in Rajasthan. Born to a financially struggling family limited her education to the 8th grade, before she was married off. Her husband, who works as an electrician, lacks job stability, earning only 4-5 days of work per month. Despite their financial struggles, Anita and her husband have three children, two sons, and a daughter who attend public school.
The family resides in a self-made mud and stone house, which lacks basic amenities such as a bathroom. In an effort to provide for her family, Anita owns a cow that gives 2-3 litres of milk daily, which she shares with other villagers who help with its upkeep.
Recently, Anita encountered severe difficulties in feeding her family, and thus, approached Khilti Pari for assistance. Three months ago, she started working at an all-women clothing factory to improve her economic situation and provide for her family. Khilti Pari stands committed to supporting her efforts in regaining financial stability, as we recognize her perseverance and dedication towards her children.
Indu Sharma, 2021
Indu Sharma is a determined woman living in the Danau village, located 10km from Toonga, Rajasthan. Born to a poor family, Indu was one of seven daughters whose parents made sure all of them received an education at the government school and even attended college. Indu graduated with a BSc from Bassi College and has been working in the medical department in her village. She currently works for Anganwadi, a care centre for the village, but earns an insufficient salary of only 3000-4000rs per month.
Indu and her husband have two children, a son attending a private school and a daughter attending the government school in Dausa. Despite the challenges of living in close quarters with extended family members, Indu persisted and continued working during the pandemic. She faced a major setback when her brother-in-law passed away from COVID-19, leaving her family in a difficult financial situation. Nevertheless, Indu remained strong and committed to her job in the medical department, where she provided pregnancy guidance, spread awareness about Covid-19, and assisted people in getting vaccinated.
Pinky Meena, 2021
Pinky Meena, a woman residing in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, faced a challenging situation after her husband passed away due to cancer, leaving Pinky to provide for their 6-month old son. Pinky's brother-in-law offered some support initially, but eventually stopped providing financial assistance. He soon wanted Pinky to leave her son and go away to Natapratha.
During her husband's death ritual, her brother-in-law asked Pinky to either provide the expenses of 117,000 rupees or the land she owns. Despite her parents' efforts to help, they were not financially stable enough to provide significant assistance, leaving her to pay.
Like a lot of other villagers, Pinky earns her livelihood by selling goats and farming for others. In addition, she joined Koyou, an all-women's factory, and learned sewing to support herself and her son. However, due to the pandemic, Pinky is currently unemployed.
Maya Dulariya, 2020
Maya Dulariya is a resilient woman from the Bassi district of Rajasthan. Despite the challenges she faces, Maya's determination to provide for her family remains unwavering. Her husband, a shoe repairman, struggles with alcohol and does not contribute to their household income. As a result, Maya has had to shoulder the financial responsibilities for her children's upbringing.
Before her current circumstances, Maya worked as a playgroup teacher and sold hand-made toys to make ends meet. However, in search of more stable employment, Maya began working at Koyou, a clothing factory, where she learned how to sew. When their son required a heart operation, Maya's husband did not provide any support. In the face of this challenge, Maya sold her jewelry to pay for the operation.
Despite these hardships, Maya remains dedicated to her children's education. With the support of Khilti Pari, her daughter, Divya, has been able to continue her studies for the past 3 years, and we are committed to continuing our support for her future education. Maya's story is a testament to the strength and perseverance of women who strive to provide for their families despite overwhelming odds.
Sonu Sharma, 2020
Meet Sonu Sharma, a woman living in the Jaipur district of Rajasthan, India. Ten years ago, her husband passed away in a tragic accident, leaving her to raise their daughter and son on her own. To make matters more challenging, they live in a joint family with her brother in-law, who unfortunately doesn't provide her with any assistance.
Despite the numerous hurdles she faced, Sonu persevered to provide for her family. Her daughter is currently in 12th grade studying arts, and her son is in college. While her parents do contribute some financial support, it is not sufficient to cover all of their expenses. To support her family, Sonu initially started working as a maid at a private school. Over time, she transitioned to working in a hospital, and later, at Koyou, where she learned sewing and earned extra income by maintaining the factory. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, Sonu lost her job.
Undeterred, Sonu has continued to work hard to provide for her family. She is currently working as a maid in our computer lab and has recently joined Khilti Pari, to provide support to underprivileged women like herself. Sonu is determined to do whatever it takes to give her children the best possible life.
